Abstract

The attention paid to wildlife tourism has been growing in both industry and academic circles in recent years. One avenue for improving understanding of what visitors are seeking from their experience is to approach the question from a wildlife specialization framework. This paper reports findings from a study of 710 visitors to Flinders Chase National Park, on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. Results indicate that viewing animals close up in their natural environment has widespread appeal to wildlife visitors. As visitors become more specialised (defined as how important wildlife is in their travel decisions), increasing emphasis was placed on features such as close-up viewing of unique species, in natural environments, and with animals behaving naturally. The results also highlight the controversial and contradictory nature of the wildlife feeding issue.
