Abstract

Sustainable Development Goals and Information Literacy are two flagship programs for UNESCO and hence for many organizations in the world. Understanding and appropriately implementing the directions and strategies embedded in these important ideas is potentially both life and world changing. Each one is typically discussed separately; although links continue to be made between them, especially in this conference. In this presentation, I propose information literacy as a connecting thread between the SDGs, and a cornerstone in the realization of SDGs. Information literacy is important to the achievement of all SDGs; and together IL and SDGs form a strong rope, intertwined resources for operationalizing empowerment. The first part of the presentation will propose a rich way of thinking about information literacy, also known as informed learning. I describe informed learning as being about the experience of using information to learn. Informed learning enables social empowerment by supporting engagement with information, and the communal and collaborative using of information, in both informal and formal contexts.
